Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

Thanks to Huey for the Inspiration for this post!
Ok so its clear to see that my dress is not an exact replica, i liked the strap design of the 'Never Gonna Dance' dress in Swingtime more than the strap design of the 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' Dress plus i didn't happen to have Bernard Newman to make it for me, but i thought i'd share these recent photos so you can compare instead the two dresses :) I had mine made by a dress maker for a not inconsiderable sum and its pure silk although Ginger's gleams better!

If you look carefully in the second picture it is just possible to see what book i am holding ;)

Thanks very much also to Arianna for the following link http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/exhibition-hollywood-costume/inside-the-exhibition/ if anyone is in the UK, i know i'm definitely going to make the effort to go and pay a visit, anything to see any of Ginger's costumes!!!

  1. I remember when on Facebook we were talking about those dresses!
AH that replica is so pretty!!! As I have said before, I wish I knew someone who could design it for me.

Lucky duck, you get to see that outfit. If only I was on vacation from school and I could take a trip................

    1. I took all the photos and information i could find on the making of it of the original to a dressmaker, but it did cost a small fortune :( its not something i could afford again in a hurry especially now i rather like this travelling lark!

  2. ...awesome, Kat!!! Is this the same one that's your 'profile pic'?

...and, ya got me on the book - looks like an GandF cover, but not sure which...is it the Croce book? Of course, my eyesight is really not great, so... :[

...well, I guess this may also serve as a 'not so subtle' hint that Hu needs to get cracking on Roberta! Well, heck...guess what...I have a presentation to make on the 28th of Nov...first one I've done in years...heck, maybe since college...I'll put it this way...the last one I did, I used a carousel slide projector... (wiki it...it's a historic method of projecting images) :-] So, all that to say, unless I get REAL comfortable with the presentation scope, Roberta may be a December baby... which might be just as well, segueing into the Season...

Well, again, it's a beautiful dress, Kat...but don't dance too much in it...it's probably a bear to get dry cleaned! :-]

    KIG!!!

    1. One and the same, just much more recent!!

And yes even with your not so great eyesight you have scored a bullseye, it is indeed Croce's book!

Good luck with the presentation! Will it be powerpoint this time?!

Will look forward to the Roberta review but sure can wait till Dec :)

I took it to be drycleaned last week, cost a 'mere' $26, not something i want to have to pay too often!!!

All is good on this side of the pond, long time since the UK has been 'The Mother Country' to the US and not to most of it either? heck how much of the US was there in 1776? haha

I should def get to check out the exhibit, i have a week off uni before christmas when should have time to go before the schools break up over here!

    2. ...well, I have finally figured out PowerPoint... so should be pretty cool... I'll be working on Roberta in a little over a week!

...good to know I spotted the right book - I think my cover is a bit different - I know there were at least a few different ones... mine is 'hardcover', and is yellow... hey, does yours have the pics at the top corner of each page, so that when you flip thru them, GandF dance around a bit? I thought that was wickedawesome..(affirmative Boston term...) ...well, have fun at the exhibit, and of course, DOCUMENT!!! (something tells me you will, if possible...)

      KIG, Kat!!!

    1. cool stuff! Hey, what is the book on the floor? Like a 'magazine' or 'program'...hmmmm...y'know, SOMETHING tells me that is a 'playbill' from TopHat... just guessing!

  4. ...dang... I thought I commented on this... But maybe not... an awesome dress, Kat!!! Here's hoping you get to check out that exhibit...

Hope all is well in The Mother Country! Or is that 'proper'? I really need to learn protocol, I guess... :-)

    KIG!

  5. Awesome pics, Kat. And great job on the dress. It looks wonderful on you. The "Never Gonna Dance" dress is my favorite of all of Ginger's gowns but I do love the "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" dress, too. Now what you need to do is photoshop Fred into the first pic so you have the classic Roberta pose. :)
