The gift of Ginger

Monday 2nd April
My alarm was set for 7am but clearly i was too tired to take any notice and then woke up with a start at 7.40am. Thanks to getting everything ready the night before i was able to get up have breakfast, pack away the last few oddments, get my suitcase stored and check out the hostel by 8.20! I had decided to take the T as it’s cheaper and quicker than taking a cab, so hopped down there, i got asked by a guy selling papers where i’d got my krispy kreme donuts from, i didn’t know before but you can’t get them in Boston, i’d got mine in New York as a indulgent purchase whilst waiting for the train :)
I accidently missed my stop on the T but did get to visit the first 7-11 that i’d seen since arriving in the United States, i considered getting a slurpee but 8.52 in the morning isn’t quite the time lol so i just got dr pepper and ice (never too early in that form hehe)

I then opted for taking the T back instead of walking to the stop that i should have got off at, was a thrill to see the banner proclaiming Ginger's Century exhibition again, i checked my watch as i walked into the Frost room 9.10 wasn't bad going all things considered!

I spent the next 2 and a half hours taking photos and dodging tours, there seemed to be far more today than there had been on Friday..
This is the best reason to take plenty of camera batteries hehe, my camera was fully charged when i arrived at the exhbition and the battery had died by 11.35am. Apart from when the tours came in my camera was on the entire time and being used

I decided this was probably a good time to stop for lunch while trying to work out what i was going to do about my camera, i had the charger but needed to find somewhere to charge it!
Chicken broth for lunch today, i should have remembered from Friday that 12oz would be too much needless to say i was convinced that it wouldn't and of course i was wrong and couldn't finish it lol
I thought of Fred as i ate my soup (as ya do) but mine wasn't chicken noodle ;) and i wasn't about to go and dance hehe

Was done with lunch by 12.20pm so hopped back to the exhibition and looked around hopefully for a power outlet, there was a spare where the home video of the Misouri waltz was playing so i hoped they wouldn't mind too much, i still wasn't too sure about use of the camera at all lol, but other people had been taking photos when they'd come in with the tour groups and the guides hadn't said anything which i could only take as a good sign!

I spent my time while the camera was charging looking at parts of the exhibition that hadn't yet caught my eye and also watching the video clips, included in them were, Ginger singing 'Lets Call the Whole Thing Off, followed by the dance on Roller skates and Ginger as Linda telling Lady Tarrington that she's never going to divorce Peter from 'Shall We Dance', Cheek to Cheek and The Piccolino, song and dance number from Top Hat, the very end of The Major and the Minor and the part in Kitty Foyle where Kitty is being warned by 'her self' in the mirror about why she shouldn't go back to Wyn. They'd formally had a clip of Fred dancing with Harriet Hoctor as well (some people lol) but after several tip offs that it wasn't Ginger they'd finally removed it :) They also have Lela Rogers home video taken on the set of The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" along with a 8mm film version of The Missouri Waltz showing along with the studio footage as comparison :)

Thankfully the camera didn't take to long too recover, i think i took photos of pretty much everything in the exhibition and then some haha, when i have recovered from all the jetlag and got meeting for placement over with i will upload all the lovely photos

I stopped taking photos around half 3 and just gave myself half an hour to look around the exhibition one last time, even after 7 hours i could easily have spent another 7 and not gotten bored of it. That is the gift of Ginger ;)

I'd forgotten to retrieve my charger and then got told off for using their plug socket when the guy came in to switch off the movies, he came in earliar than i was expecting (on Friday he'd come in and switched off at 4.10pm but today he switched off at 3.50pm which disappointed me because i was watching the missouri waltz when he came in. After that i had a last look round, just saying thankyou to the wonderful photos hehe and blowing kisses ;)

Then i had a last look at the small display cabinet containing artefacts formally belong to Adele and Fred Astaire before leaving the library at 4pm. I really did not want to leave and could quite happily have set up camp in the exhibition but i'm not sure they'd have taken that so well lol
Plus i had to find a post office, do some last minute food shopping and make it the airport by 5.45pm for my 7.45 flight

i saw George the train guy i'd chatted to on Friday again which was nice, unfortunately i didn't get to say goodbye in person as he had to deal with a problem but his colleague said he'd pass it on and waved me on to the train without letting me swipe my card to pay ;)

Got off the T for the last time of the trip at 4.30 and then took a hop down Mass Ave (Massachusetts Avenue to see if i could find a post office to send off a special housewarming gift, fortunately i found one just as i was starting to despair handily two stores from CVS, i got really confused with which box to use and finding an envelope so not to get the most important part of the gift spoilt and then about what address i should enter in the from box.. i ended up putting my home address, then waiting ages in the very long line just to get to the front to discover that i had to put as US address on the box :/
Also the box i used had a flat rate regardless of weight so the guy supplied me with a new box so i could rectify the address issue and also to save me money just having to pay for the weight :) By the time all that was sorted it was 5.05pm and i had 40 minutes to get back to the hostel and pick up my bag and get to the airport! Although I knew that as long as i got to the airport by 6.15 then i'd be ok!

Because of the close proximity of CVS i popped in there to pick up some last minute groceries :) i ended up with two packs of my favourite chips ahoy peanut butter cookies, 4 boxes of candy, a bag of dum dum pops, 2 bags of cheese ritz bits and a big box of fruit loops! As long as they fit in my suitcase it'll be fine! fortunately the shopping only took 5 minutes (i knew exactly what i wanted lol) Although i was disappointed as they'd sold out of cans of Dr Pepper, but hopefully i'll be able to get some at the airport :) I've clearly finally got the hang of this hopping thing as i managed to get back to the hostel by 5.25pm, they were most accomodating with calling me a cab, which oblidgingly turned up within 5 minutes of it being called :)

The traffic was a lot lighter today than it had been on Thursday, with it being the same time of day more or less this was a pleasant surprise and we made it to the airport at 5.45pm exactly (much faster and also cheaper than thurs!!) giving me plenty of time to check in, get through security and relax before my flight which was good, i got my remaining krispy kreme donuts through security without anyone pointing out that i had 3 items for carry on (when the max is 2) and fortunately i was able to buy dr pepper once i was in the departure area :) 4 bottles should last me a little while lol

Boarding was fairly simple, i knew from checkin that the plane wasn't going to be that busy, the set out was different from the flight out and it turned out we'd had an equipment change from a Airbus 340-600 to an Airbus 340-300, the main downside it appeared for this plane was that we were stuck with movies on a loop rather than AVOD (audio video on demand) as it turned out in the end mine wasn't working anyway and i ended up with a dvd player instead, which meant that i didn't get to see J Edgar which had been looking forward to watching again, i could have moved, but i had a spare seat next to me (of the middle 4 only the 2 aisle seats were occupied) so i chose to stay where i was, plus that way i got to put my foot up :) It was a pretty smooth flight however, although not as enjoyable as the flight out, sad to be leaving the US but looking forward to seeing Anneliese and hopefully can come back soon!

photos to follow!

2nd and last day in NYC and back to Boston!

Sunday 1st April
Was woken up briefly at 6.25am by the French girl in the bunk above mine checking out then had a lovely lie in till about 9.30am, boy did i need it!
I was due to meet my cousin Paul at 11am for brunch but he’d warned me to check my emails before i set off as he was on call for the hospital where he works so i had plenty of time fortunately to do that (no calls!) and check my email, glad to hear ya’ll are liking my trip report J
I took the subway to where my cousin shares an apartment with his gf in Harlem, i thought of Glory as the train got nearer, at this hour of the morning i doubt i’ll be seeing anyone visiting Harlem for the purpose she dreamed of ;) i’d not met my cousin’s gf before even though they’ve been dating for years so it was good to finally meet her. Also pretty cool to see inside a New York apartment, very different from Friends hehe. Fortunately the building they live in has an elevator as they’re on the 8th floor
We went out for brunch as promised, in a charming little restaurant promising the best brunch in Harlem. We started with charming little pastry bites smothered in butter and real strawberry jam and then we all had skirt steak topped with two eggs (over easy) with potatoes and Mimosa to drink, i had to ask what that is (orange juice and champagne) at home they call it Bucks Fizz, i stuck with the one glass and somehow as Paul and Erica (his gf) had the unlimited ($8 for 1 or $12 for 2 or more) we ended up getting mine for free J Although to be fair i wasn’t the one paying the bill!!
Unfortunately by the time we left the restaurant the weather was on the turn, i had to go back to the apartment anyway as i’d left my bag there, but it was much easier to spend the afternoon with them in the dry and warm and watch tv then head out, spend more money and get soaked ;) I chatted to Erica about why i’d come to the US on this particular trip and showed her and Paul the photos i got at Jerry Ohlinger’s yesterday, can safely say that Ginger and Fred have a couple more fans! Was also nice to have a rest in a lovely homely environment and i got yesterday’s blog entry all finished J
Finally left theirs around 4.30pm, unfortunately was just starting to rain again, but fortunately it wasn’t far to the subway, nice to know am welcome back anytime, as my cousin lives and works in NYC i don’t really get to see him unless i’m in the city so i always make the effort to make contact when i’m over here J I was thinking about getting off at Grand Central to head for Times Square to find ‘Ginger’s Restaurant’ but from all the umbrella’s getting on it appeared the rain was getting heavier not lighter L hopefully next time i’ll have the opportunity to find it, it’s on my list along with 1605 Gilcrest Drive in Beverly Hills ;)
Got off at 28th and got soaked in the short hop to The Gershwin, i took full advantage of their internet while drying off hehe, it was still only 5pm so i had plenty of time before needing to retrieve my suitcase and head for Penn Station and the Acela back to Boston
Had a small wait to get a cab but not as long as one might expect on a wet Sunday afternoon, i got to Penn Station at 6pm so plenty of time to buy food and drink for the train, print my ticket etc, sad to be leaving New York, i’m used to only spending a couple of days here at a time but i’m also used to having full use of both feet! I’m not entirely sure what hurts more anymore, my foot or my hands from the crutches even with several layers of airplane socks wrapped around the handles ;)
The train ride back to Boston seemed a lot longer than the trip to New York, i didn’t quite get that normally it’s the other way around lol, then again it was getting dark and it was raining so once again no scenery to speak of. I passed my time trying and failing to use their wi-fi and watching Follow the Fleet J The train seemed a lot joltier on the way back and i spent more time than i would have liked fighting nausea L normally i’m ok on trains but not this one unfortunately.
I wish they would give a little more warning about what station is coming up next, luckily i’d already put all my things away, but it was a rush that i didn’t particularly need getting off the train at Boston’s Back Bay station, unfortunately to get assistance i would have needed to go to South Station, the final stop but as i pointed out to the conductor my ticket was for Back Bay! I bumped into a couple of people who’d been on the same train to New York yesterday morning and asked if they’d had a good weekend, turned out one of them has a daughter who lives near me at home in Cambridge, such a small world this is!!
The taxi rank wasn’t particularly well signposted (i may have come out the wrong side of the station) but i must have been suitably looking like a damsel in distress (or a drowned rat, as the rain was heavier here than it had been in New York) as a cab pulled over when i was just starting to panic about getting back to the Hostel, so good timing and all J
Got back to the Hostel at 11pm, checked in fine and got assigned a room and bunk on the ground floor, so no stairs this time J I’d gone for an all female dorm when i booked but the only dorm that had space on the ground floor was co-ed, anything than the stairs was good for me! There were only four of us in a room that takes 18 so no issues on space haha
Repacked my suitcase so i’ll be good to go in the morning, got rid of all the unneeded plastic bags, i just hope i’m not gonna go overweight or have any issues at customs, the majority of items going home have been purchased in the US
I took the opportunity while i was doing that to charge my camera, it’ll sure get lots of use on the morrow!!
Bed for me at 12.40am, alarm set for 7am so i’ll have the chance to eat breakfast before i go back to the Mugar and the exhibition on Ginger!!

The end of Friday and on to see New York!!

Well i stayed in Ginger's exhibition until they came and said it was time to lock up ;) the guy doing the lockup was impressed with my combat trousers (of all things haha) mainly because the pattern on my trousers matched his jacket, he asked where i got them from and then when i said i got them at home in England that bought me a few more minutes to look at Ginger hehe, he was however far more impressed that i'd travelled all this way just to see the exhibition and he also recommended a trip upstairs to examine the archives, apparently they have a lot more stuff that they just couldn't fit in the exhibition ;)

On leaving the library i realised that calling a cab was out (no number for a start lol) so i asked a couple of guys outside where the nearest T line was, fortunately it was only just accross the street, just in the middle of the road :) I then somehow managed (as ya do) to get into a really interesting conversation with one of the train staff on duty, he and his colleague appeared to be there to remind people they had to pay and to let them swipe their cards in advance of the train, the conversation mainly focused on comparisons between the UK and the US but it was fascinating for me and somehow i didn't get the train until 6pm

I then unfortunately missed my stop so had to back track and so got back to the hostel around 7pm, then came the realisation about how slow their wi-fi is, it took half an hour for the banner photo to upload, which is why the post on the exhibition and the photos post were done separately!

After that i decided dinner wasn the order of the day and went to find Boston's Hard Rock Cafe,
only to find when i got there that the restaurant was closed for a private event :( The shop fortunately was still open so i was able to get a small gift for Anneliese (using my all access points hehe) but i'd really been looking forward to comparing Boston's restaurant to all the other's i've tried..

As it was getting late i decided i might as well just go back to Wendy's hehe and go to Hard Rock Cafe in NYC
Not quite the steak i'd been hoping for but my bacon cheese burger was very nice ;) I'd almost got to the hostel though when i realised that teddy had been left behind, so back i went and fortunately he was still there waiting :)

With an early start bed was really the order of the day after that, being me i somehow got to bed at 1, with an alarm clock set for 7!!

Saturday 31st March

Woke up on time thankfully! I was able to add my shopping to the suitcase without disturbing anyone and then got myself and the bags downstairs to reception to check out :)

For some reason i'd convinced myself that the train departed Boston at 8.45am and put this down in my phone, i thought i'd better check which station and realised with a jolt that the train was departing at 8.15am!! Fortunately it was still 7.40am so i had enough time to get a cab and get to the station on time to catch the train but i'm so fortunate that i thought to check! As it was the train was slightly late and even getting there with 15 minutes to spare was more than enough time :)

The train from Boston to New York was pretty uneventful, it was snowing/raining all the way to NYC so there wasn't much to look at. I'd paid extra (or so i thought) to take the Acela to give myself a little more time in New York, but when i booked the train back the North East Regional worked out more expensive so in the end it worked out that the Acela and the NE Regional came out at the same price more or less and the Acela is 30 minutes or so faster :)

I was able to get assistance at NY Penn Station and so getting a cab was pretty simple, the hotel had confirmed that i could store my suitcase during the day so the first thing i did was exactly that
I'd booked the Gershwin Hotel which is situated at 7 E27th St by 5th Avenue in the former Tin Pan Alley Area, i've stayed here everytime that i've stayed in NYC itself and i thoroughly recommend it

After i dropped my suitcase off i went and got the 4 train to Woodlawn and Woodlawn Cemetary, Vernon and Irene Castle are interred there as is Irving Berlin and i try and visit to pay my respects everytime i'm in the city
Fortunately by the time i got there it had stopped raining, i was able to get a map, even with this being the 3rd time i visited i got lost trying to find the spot where Vernon and Irene are situated, once i'd found the circle they're located off i found them straight away though ;) I just need to remember how to find that main circle (this has a really impressive maseolum in the middle like a small church)

After that i took the subway back to Manhattan, i'd been in New York around 2 hours and was ready to do some shopping ;)
As i'd come to the US without Anneliese i'd agreed that i'd visit the American Girl Doll Store and she'd picked out the outfit she wanted for her Bitty Baby on the internet before i came, I picked up a couple of leaflets at Grand Central that entitled me to free items if i spent so much money at Build a Bear and American Girl, i hadn't originally been intending to go into Build a Bear at all but it's so much cheaper in the US than it is in the UK (thanks to costs of shipping and the exchange rate) that i found myself drawn in, I was able to replace an outfit that part of had been lost on last year's long trip accross the US so i was pleased about that and a pyjama outfit, $25 inc tax with an easter set and a free bag (because i'd spent $25) was a much better deal than anything i could have got at home, plus both outfits were exclusive to New York so definitely can't get them anywhere else!

After that i moved to the American Girl Store where i ran into problems upon discovering that the outfit that Anneliese had picked out has been discontinued. She'd asked for the outfit for her doll and also the outfit in her size and they only had it left in a small.. To make up though i got two outfits for her baby and the matching outfits for her so hopefully she'll be more than satisfied!! I's a good thing i can't go shopping at American Girl very often, i couldn't quite believe the total they gave me at the cashier desk hahaha. i also got a book though for spending over $40 so that was pretty good :)

I then decided it was more than time to go and do some shopping for me! And headed for Jerry Ohlinger's Movie Materials Store at 253 W35th St between 7th and 8th, i was a little worried that they might have been victims of the recession but thankfully they are still there :)
I got a couple of photos of Ginger that i hadn't seen before and also a few of Ginger and Fred, when i get home i'll scan them and share, but beautiful is a good way to start describing them ;)

After that i thought that with all the shopping i had that it would be a good idea to go back to the hotel and then think about what to do this evening, I it took rather a long time to get back because i stopped at Penn Station on the way for a Krispy Kreme donut but by 6.30pm i'd managed it :) I was able to check in ok and retrieved my bag and got it upstairs, when i booked it said i'd got in a 4 bunk room but instead i was in a 6 bunk room, but this suited me fine, was a slight comedown as last year when i travelled with Anneliese i'd had to get a private room as they don't allow under 18 year old's in their dorm rooms, but it worked out much cheaper this way!

I decided to go and see if i could get food at Hard Rock Cafe New York because i'd missed out on Boston last night, the store's always pretty busy but i thought with the all access card that i might get lucky with the restaurant :)
For some reason i decided to hop down rather than taking the subway so it took a while but i got some photos of New York City Library which i liked, last year it was all covered with scaffolding but the work has now been finished so it looks just like it did in Sex and The City - The Movie!
I got to Hard Rock and they warned me that even with the all access card i was looking at a 25-30 minute wait, i'd brought my book along anticipating having to wait a little so i didn't have a problem with that, 25-30 minutes isn't long compared to how long you can wait in London!!

I'd just sat down and got settled when my name flashed up on their now seating screen, from entering their system and getting to the front of the queue for seating took 4 minutes, they encourage you to get your photo taken with the guitars but even that only took a moment so i was really impressed with the speed of being seated! I was right by the kitchen which turned out to be in my favour and the waitress i got was absolutely fantastic, i opted for steak and smashed potatoes, which i have almost every time i eat at Hard Rock Cafe, i tried something else once but have since gone back to tried and tested!

I got my food pretty quickly, tasted as good in New York as it has anywhere else i've had it :) I didn't get to look much at the memorabilia they have, thanks to being on crutches i'm slightly limited, but what i did see was pretty cool, i was amused to see the words Judas Priest on a plaque near my table, it would appear it was also someone's name but it made me think of Kitty ;)
I was able to use the rest of the money saved on my all access card towards my bill which impressed me, in London they insist its all or nothing

I was tempted by the Hard Rock Cafe bear dressed as the Statue of Liberty but somehow managed not to buy it! I then took a small trip to the Disney Store where i was disappointed to find that they no longer do Pin Trading, they'd stopped doing this at home a while ago and now it would seem that it includes all Disney Stores :( They did still have a NYC pin set on sale and it appears that the sets will keep being sold in stores just no pin trading..
They have a new Disney scent out which so far hasn't got to the UK, so i got some of that (as ya do) plus 4 minnie mouse t-shirts, 1 for me and 3 for Anneliese, how that worked out i'll never know haha
I succummbed to buying Minnie in her Statue of Liberty outfit but she was a lot cheaper than the Hard Rock Cafe version so it wasn't so bad (i'm trying to convince myself of this still lol)

I turned back for the hotel just after midnight, very busy but hey it's a Saturday Night in Manhattan, i shouldn't expect anything less! I did think of walking back but in the end i hopped back over to 5th Avenue and hailed a cab to take me the remaining 15 blocks!

When i got back to the room and the hotel, it was a hive of activity so i didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone thankgoodness!

I got chatting to the people i was sharing with, all around the same age as myself, it turned out the only male in the room was doing film studies and had just done a paper on 'The Gay Divorcee'!!! of all the coincidences in the world it was a good one for me ;) They loved the photos that i'd got from Jerry Ohlinger's and thought it was great that i'd come all the way to the US for Ginger's exhbition, the guy who'd written the paper was from Canada and the two girls who were in the room at the moment, one was from Germany and the other from France so a wide variety of nationalities!

As it was pushing it for 1am, sleep was all in order, i'm meeting my cousin for brunch at 11, so get a little lie in!! first of the trip :o
